The iconic Poolbeg Stacks towering above the Dublin City skyline were built between 1969 and 1977. The two industrial chimneys can hardly be described as beautiful architectural gems, yet when the (Irish) (Electrical Supply Board) decided to demolish them, there was a public outcry. Initial attempts by the historian Dermot Lacey to have them listed as protected structures failed, but they were eventually listed as protected structures in 2014. So, with their survival assured for the moment, the twin monuments to a mood, continue to contribute an attractive element to Dublin’s skyline for those sailing into Dublin Bay, and a welcome to those making a homecoming.
