Piazza del Campo, Siena, Tuscany, Italy, the middle ages the Campo has been the centre of civic and social life in Siena. The brick paving dates from the 14th century and is divided into 9 sections commemorating the Rule of Nine mediaeval governing body. The area is a World Heritage Site. Horse riders compete in the Palio, a high speed bare back riding race held in July and August around the Campo.
