The following drawing representsthe stump resulting from Ileys operation as performed by me withLisfrancs Ileys operation—left foot MEDICAL GAZETTE. 197 The most formidable evil which may follow upon the partial am-putation of the foot, by Choparts method, is the luxation, forward, ofthe astragalus and calcaneum, produced by the want of antagonisticpower in front to oppose the action of the gastrocnemii and solaeusupon the os calcis behind. After Heys operation, the equilibriumbetween the extensors and flexors of the foot is completely maintained,partly by the tendinous insertions of some of the extensor muscleswhich are left undetached, and partly by the incorporation and ad-herence upon the dorsal aspect of the stump of all the tendons metwith in this region. Thus a portion of the insertion of tibialis anticusis left at the internal cuneiform bone ; the peroneus tertivs, when itexists, is inserted by aponeurotic expansion into the os cuboides above,and the peroneus brevis is also inserted into the os cuboides, upon itsupper part.
