The church was previously sited in the estate village, which was demolished and rebuilt in cottage - ornee Swiss style in the C19 by Jesse Watts-Russell who lived in Ilam Hall. The chapel contains a mausoleum to David Pike-Watts, Jesse Watts-Russell's father-in-law.
