Blue sky view, towards Central Railway Station, roadworks and building site, Invalidenstrasse at Friedrich List Ufer, Berlin
Berlin Central Railway Station is a monumental glass structure, which opened in May 2006, across the River Spree, north of the New German Chancellery Building. It is the biggest station in the European high-speed railway network. Platforms at several levels are served by S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains. The area around the station is being re-developed. Here we see building works at the northern side of the station, at Invalidenstrasse. Groundwater, on average, is only 2 m below the surface in Berlin, so, when new building work starts, impeding groundwater needs to be drained out off the foundation pit. Blue pipes, crossing Friedrich List Ufer and Invalidenstrasse, drain groundwater from the building site in the centre of the shot.
