Other tillage implements, such as the acme spike-toothand spring tooth harrows may be used at short intervals after thefirst plowing and disking ( and 237). By midsummer it is usually bestto stop tillage. This will allow thetrees to stop growing and ripentheir wood and form the budscales for winter protection. Theyare then less likely to be injuredby winter freezing. A part of the annual tillageshould include the sowing of thewinter cover crop at the timewhen the cultivation ceases.
