My interest was now centred in Lake Tchad, aboutwhich I had heard so much, but concerning whichbut little reliable information was forthcoming. I wasparticularly anxious to make the acquaintance of theisland natives, whose fierce disposition had beendescribed to me. Our little vessel steamed noisily to the mouth ofthe Shari, whilst a fresh north-easterly breeze cooledthe atmosphere.
