A class 47 diesel locomotive number 47971 waits to depart London Kings Cross with a the return leg of a London Christmas Shopping charter.
During the early 1990s 'London Shopping' charters from a variety of northern cities into the capital were a regular feature on the network in the run up to Christmas. On the 5th December 1992 47971 waits to depart London Kings Cross with the return working of one such charter the 18:40 to Sunderland. 47971 was one of the locos given the 47/9 classification indicating that it had been allocated to the DMEE and Research sections at Derby for powering test trains. This appearance on a charter working was therefore something of a rarity.
