The durian is a huge fruit, 15 to 20 cm in diameter, with a hard shell covered with pyrami- dal spines. It is a native of Malaya, now culti\-ated as far as 14° north in Siam, but unknown in the Philippines north of Mindanao. The trees are very large, and are said to bear in other places as many as two hundred fruits; but in Mindanao they usually bear very few. Inside the hard shell is a butter-like, creamy pulp, delicious in taste and vile in.
