Commander William Liebenow in Section 62 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, August 23, 2018. On August 7, 1943, Liebenow skippered a patrol torpedo boat to rescue the sailors of PT-109 who had survived several days on inhospitable islands after a Japanese destroyer had rammed their boat, killing two crewmen. Among those rescued was Liebenow’s bunkmate, John F. Kennedy, then 26. For his acts of heroism during World War II, he received the Bronze and Silver Stars.
