Double Eagle gold coin,1933. The world's most valuable gold coin. See description
One of the most famous coins in the world. Soon after these twenty dollar gold coins were issued President Roosevelt issued an executive order banning payouts via gold so the coins never went into circulation and they were melted into gold bars. In 1944 the secret service discovered that a Mint employee had smuggled at least ten of the coins out and 9 were recovered but one was in the possession of King Farouk of Egypt. That one coin eventually went on sale at auction and after a drawn out legal battle it was deemed the one and only 1933 Double Eagle that was legal to own. It sold for $7,590,020. It is currently on display in New York
