Since its inception, the program has advanced technology to reduce the size, weight and power of autonomous systems; increase operational speed in complex environments; develop obstacle detection, perception and mapping capabilities; and provide new understanding in bio-inspired agility and maneuverability. Several research efforts are ongoing and have advanced expertise within the Army to continue improving autonomous systems. Current research areas include: Development of bio-inspired sensors and controls, including sensor integration, human-in-the-loop controls and position, navigation and timing. Aeromechanics, soft materials, fluid and flight dynamics. Manipulation and mobility, , self-righting and grasping. Collaboration behaviors, network-aware communications and GPS-denied navigation.
