Dawson Turner (1775-1858), British botanist. Turner was born in Norfolk into the family of a banker. His interest in botany started at school, however his education ended with the death of his father and his return home to take over the banking business. He continued his studies in the evenings and at weekends, and published several books on botany, notably on the bryophytes (mosses). In later years his interests turned to antiquarian pursuits, and he gave his herbarium to his son-in-law, William Jackson Hooker.
