Hamer maza and bull jumpers

The jumping of the bulls ceremony is a Hamer rights of passage where boys pass to manhood. Lines of 12 or more cattle are lined up for the initiate to run and jump over. Prior to the jump the initiate has his hair arranged in the distinctive style. The maza with the knife is a Hamer who has jumped the bulls and will have the task of lining up the bulls for the new jumper. The maza live for a time in the bush before returning to their village to take a wife.
