In parts of the town of Goma devasted by the volcanic eruption that destroyed about a third of the town, trees not completely destroyed are cut up for fuel.

When the Nyriragongo volcano erupted on 18th Jan 2002 lava flowed into Goma in Democratic Republic of Congo, destroying one third of the town and killing 45 people. The 3,469-metre Nyiragongo volcano is one of eight scattered along the borders of Rwanda, Congo and Uganda, and is only about 10 kilometres from Goma.
