Iron-regulatory protein bound to RNA, molecular model. Iron regulatory protein 1 (IRP1, green) bound to a short strand of RNA (ribonucleic acid, pink)

Iron-regulatory protein bound to RNA, molecular model. Iron regulatory protein 1 (IRP1, green) bound to a short strand of RNA (ribonucleic acid, pink) that includes iron-responsive elements (IREs). Depending on the conformation of IRP1, it can acts as either a regulator of mRNA (messenger RNA) or an enzyme. IRP1 plays a key role in the regulation of human iron metabolism.
