China: Emperor Xianfeng (17 July 1831– 22 August 1861), 9th Qing Emperor (r. 1850-1861). Hanging scroll painting, c. 1850s. The Xianfeng Emperor, given name Yizhu and temple name Wenzong, was the seventh Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. His reign was chaotic and saw several wars and rebellions break out, such as the Taiping Rebellion, Miao Rebellion, Nian Rebellion, Panthay Rebellion and the Second Opium War. He was an ineffective and self-indulgent leader, and the Qing Dynasty lost great swathes of land under his rule. His view on Chinese superiority led him to severely misunderstand Europeans.
