Injured knee. 39 year old man's swollen knee (seen at left) caused by a torn medial meniscus. The medial meniscus is a crescent-shaped structure of fibrocartilage found between the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone) on the inside of the knee. It acts as a shock absorber. It is a common site of injury, especially if the knee is twisted, which commonly occurs in contact sports. Mild damage is treated by rest and physiotherapy, but severe injuries require surgery, which can increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis.
