Stomach cancer. Light micrograph of a section through an adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Adeno- carcinomas are malignant tumours that arise from glandular tissue, such as mucus-secreting cells in the stomach. The cancer cells in this example have formed disorganised glandular structures with hol- low cavities. The cells lining these have large, dark-staining nuclei, typical of rapidly dividing cells. The cells between glands are mostly white blood cells that have infiltrated the area in res- ponse to inflammation. Stomach cancer is often fatal as symptoms usually do not appear until the disease has spread. Sample stained with eosin and hematoxylin. Magnification x125 at 35mm size.
