The determination to submit this work to thepublic arose from the numerous memoirs on thewar in the Peninsula, published by Frenchofficers, and the announcement of the speedyappearance of more laboured productions onthe same subject, without any British officerstepping forward with a narrative of theactions of his countrymen.
