St Celynin's Old Church: view ENE to Cerrig y Ddinas outcrop, Conwy & Llandudno beyond. Ffynnon Gelynin holy well in S corner (near R) of churchyard.

View ENE over St Celynin's Old Church to Cerrig y Ddinas outcrop with Conwy & Llandudno beyond. Ffynnon Gelynin holy well is in S corner (near R) of the churchyard. Built in a remote upland location, the church is situated at the meeting of several footpaths. There was an inn here & a stable attached to the churchyard for travellers crossing the mountain. The ancient well was used for treatment & divination of the sick; children were dipped in the water in the early morning then carried in blankets to sleep at a nearby farmhouse. A small fort on the outcrop NE of the well, & a hut circle between two streams to the S, have led to suggestions of a pagan Celtic sanctuary taken over by a Christian saint in the C6th: Celynin is Welsh for holly. Reputedly founded in the C7th, the oldest part of the current church is the C12th nave; the chancel is C15th, the N transept & S porch C16th. Taken in late summer with berries on the rowan trees.
