Illustration of white dwarf system G238-44. At the centre of the system, an accretion disk made of shattered bodies fall on the white dwarf. The remaining asteroid and planetary bodies act as reserve material around the star. Larger gas giant planets may still exist in the system. The dead star also captures material from comets and icy bodies in the outer reaches of its system.
