FoK this purpose the author dips strips of white filterpaper, free from nitric acid, into the water or soil leavingone end exposed to the air. The nitrates rise in the paperby capillarity and accumulate in. part of the exposedportion of the paper strip, which may then lie tested bymeans of phenol sulphonic acid and ammonia. If the materialbein!» tested contains a very small quantity of nitric acid,12—15 hours will he sufficient to accumulate it in 1—2 the exposed part of the paper. All the nitrates may beremoved from solution in this manner, and 0 ? nitric acid in a litre mav be detected.—D. A. L,
