osorezan aomori shimokita tourists visiting the shrine walk over rocks and paths mountain in background

Osorezan is a shrine located in the shimokita peninsula of Aomori prefecture, Tohoku, Honshu. It is regarded as one of the three most sacred shrines in the country. The main shrine and other buildings are set by a lake in the isolated forested mountains of the 'axe-head` peninsula, perhaps the most remote part of honshu. It is thought to be the entrance to hell, set in a volcanically active area where sulphur and gas constantly seep from below the ground.
