Coast Guard Helicopters Will Land on Water. Captain Frank A. Erickson, USCG, head of the Coast Guard Rotary Wing Development Project which developed the Emergency Flotation Gear floats for helicopters. Commander Erickson headed the Coast Guard forces which flew the helicopters in the rescue of passengers of the Belgian plane which crashed near Gender, Newfoundland. Here he realized the importance of a means of landing a helicopter on water or on soft ground, either in an emergency or to make a rescue.
