In the first place all of themare more elaborate than common practice justifies. The designerof today should try to make a detail as simple as possihle aswell as neat in appearance. It is also argued that riveting ofthese connections to the end post have the effect of weakeningthe post. Uot withstanding these facts some railroads haveadopted these details as standards. The American Bridge Company has a detail which isused in place of an end floor-beam, shows one view of 14 this detail and In this detail, which is in reality an end strut ,the stringerto passes over. This avoids using the stringer bracket. IToattempt is made to construct a rigid fastening to the end post for little weight is taken at that point. The top flange ofthe strut passes over the top of the end post, and is riveted tothe cover plate by means of a bent plate. The only stress thatis brought on this connection is weight due to the member itselfand any twisting movement that occurs. The argi^ment in favorof this detail is the ease with which the road bed and bridgecan be joined on account of the stringer extending past the endof the bridge. -15- One drawback to this detail is the form of bridgeseat that is required. In order to have a place for the hearing,it is necessary for the centre position of the bridge seat to beraised some distance.
