The state of New York is gaining somevaluable facts by obtaining a census ofthe deer. The reports lead to a conclu-sion that there are in round numbersabout 50,000 deer in that state. In 1917,approximately 37,000 men hunted deerand the total deer killed is estimated at10,000. Records show that 5,888 Adiron-dack deer hides were received for tanningby different tanning companies. Approximately 19,000 of the total num-ber of deer are bucks. With a kill of10,000 about 50 per cent of the bucks arekilled each year. This is a toll alreadytoo great if the deer supply is to bemaintained. As a result of investigations a shcterseason and a bag limit of one buck in-stead of two was recommended, but thelegislature, influence
