In a good, richsoil, the plants will grow eighteeninches or more in height, and for amass of splendid colors no annualor perennial will give a more satisfactory return for so little colors range from the purestwhite to the deepest blood-purpleor crimson, while the clear eye ofsome of the varieties is peculiarlymarked. The Phlox makes a verygood border or low summer finest effect, however, is pro-duced by planting each color in aseparate bed, or in ribbon fashion,its constant blooming making itdesirable for these purposes. Inselecting the plants, get good con-trasts of color, as white, scarlet,and rose. Phlox usually comesvery true from seed, so that it isparticularly desirable for formingribbon-beds; and if a plant of wrongcolor is found it can be easily re-moved and the place will soon befilled, for the Phlox is a vigorousgrower when it has room.
