Church memorial to Anna Prowse erected by her husband John Prowse after her death in 1668, she is reading from a bible. Axbridge Church Interior.

Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Somerset "The two compartments of Axbridge church wells are positioned under late medieval chamfered arches, and were restored during the latter part of the 19th Century. The well's source is off a hill which runs into a pond to the north-east of the town square, once the head of water for a water mill which existed from the Middle Ages until the 18th Century. A rarity to find a town's public wells complete, they were first mentioned in a deed of the 13th Century." (quote from Axbridge Church Wells in Axbridge - West Country - UK Attraction) Being so close to the church, I would imagine this well may have preceeded the Christian settlement. It's a pity in a way that it is so very neat, as it takes away any atmosphere from the site. The church is lovely and merits a visit. The area around the square is very nice too: quite a few old buildings give the place character - Angie Lake - Megalithic Portal
