A reproduction Roman rotary quern (hand-mill) in a display by The Ermine Street Guard at Loggerheads Country Park, Denbighshire, Wales, UK.

A reproduction Roman rotary quern (hand-mill) in a display by The Ermine Street Guard Roman re-enactment society at Loggerheads Country Park, Denbighshire, Wales, UK. A metal spindle projects from the lower stone (nether stone) & through the upper stone which is supported by a cross-shaped rynd & turned by a side handle. Grain (mainly wheat) is fed down beside the spindle & between the faces of the stones which slope downwards. Radial grooves move the flour & unground grains to the edges & out of the mill. A backwards & forwards motion works better than full rotations. Several types of coarse stone were used including Andernach lava from the Rhineland. This quern is based on one found at Newsreads Roman fort in the Scottish Borders. This display was given outside the Loggerheads Countryside Centre for National Archaeology Day 19 July 2003.
