Painted in the mid-1800s on the ceiling vault of a Breton church, two female saints: Saint Clare of Assisi (Ste Claire), who holds a rosary, and Saint Regina (Ste Reine), who holds a martyr’s palm frond and wears a martyr’s crown. Church of Saint Nonne, Dirinon, Finistère, Brittany, France: Saint Clare of Assisi (Ste Claire) and Saint Regina (Ste Reine). Among paintings executed between 1856 and 1858 by the painter Jean-Louis Nicolas (1816 - 1899) on the church’s wood-panelled ceiling. These 19th century paintings are distinct from ceiling paintings above the church’s choir. The latter depict the Last Judgement, were painted in 1715 and were restored by Jean-Louis Nicolas in 1757. Saint Clare of Assisi (1194 - 1253), follower of St Francis of Assisi, who joined a convent of Benedictine nuns and founded a new order of austerity and seclusion known as the Order of Poor Ladies. Saint Regina was a 3rd century virgin martyr, born in Autun, France, to a pagan named Clement. According to tradition, she was tortured and martyred during the persecution of Christians under Roman Emperor Decius. The Church of St Nonne was built of Logonna sandstone between the late 1500s and early 1700s. It blends Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles.
