The town had been deserted by everyonebut a blind boy and an old woman, so complete was the fright of the inhabitants,who had fled to the hills. The larger part of the insurgent forces retreated towardsDagupan, and it was impossible to pursue them further, as the troops were com-pletely exhausted. Ammunition was low and rations were carried only for twodays, so they camped for the night in the town, buried the dead, among whom wasfound an officer in lieutenant-colonels uniform—presumably the leader of the Fili-pinos in this aflair—and as it was not advisable to await further supplies from SanFabian over such devastated roads the return march was — 455 CHASING AGUINALDO EARLY in November, 1899, General Otis started a campaign the express purpose ofwhich was the capture of Aguinaldo. General S. B. M.
