Computer visualisation of the tunnel of the Large Hadron Collider or LHC, the particle accelerator due to start operations in 2006-7 at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The LHC will collide together counter-rotating beams of protons each accelerated to an energy of 7 TeV (tera-electronvolts) in a 27 km long underground ring of superconducting magnets. The magnets will be housed in the pipe- like structure, which is designed to keep them at their operating temperature of just 1. 9 degrees above absolute zero.
