A certain amount of radiation from the IMPROVED WATER SPRAY DRY KILN 197 side walls is desirable, since it increases the efficiencyof the condensers and the sprays—the heat given to thewalls does not need to be removed by the not use galvanized pipes or metal in a dry kiln,as the fumes rapidly decompose the coating. Theheated air rises in the flue between the two piles oflumber. As it comes in contact with the piles, parts ofit are cooled and forced to pass outwardly through thepiles to the spray chambers. Here the velocity of thedescending column of air is greatly augmented by thesprays. It then passes out through the baffle plates 198 THE KILN DRYING OF LUMBER into the space inunediately beneath the heaters. Hereit is in a saturated condition and its temperature istherefore manifestly the dewpoint of the air after it be-comes heated in passing through the steam pipes. Thismay, therefore, be termed the dewpoint method ofhumidity control, since thi
