Margaret displayed rare taste for works ofart, and her palace was a veritable treasurehouse of masterpieces, as an inventory pre-pared at her direction shows. One of the mostfamous of these was the portrait of JeanArnolfini and his wife by Jean Van Eyck,which — after many vicissitudes — has nowfound a. permanent resting place in the Na-tional Gallery at London, unless some militantsuffragette adds another chapter to its cheq-uered history. Another treasure has beenless fortunate, namely the portrait of Lahelle Portugalaise, wife of Philip the Good,. PORTRAIT OF JEAN ARNOLPINI AND HIS WIFE BY JEAN VAN EYCK. Malines and Margaret of Austria 341 which was painted h^ Jean Van Eyck undercircumstances already described in anotherchapter. This famous picture disappearedduring the religious wars and has never beendiscovered. The inventory lists a great manyother paintings, of which some are still in ex-istence and some have been lost. The descrip-tions are often quaint and charming, and mayhave been dictated by the Duchess herself, asfor example: Une petite Nostre-Dame di-sant ses heures, faicte de la main de Michel(Coxcie) que Madame appelle sa mignonne etle petit dieu dort/ and Ung petit paradisou sont touxs les apotres.
