Highshield Crag and Crag Lough, Northumberland

Looking west along the line of the Whin Sill and Hadrian's Wall from Highshield Crag in Northumberland. These crags standing above Crag Lough and halfway between Newcastle and Carlisle are an outcrop of the dolerite Whin Sill. A section of Hadrian's wall was carried over these crags and sections of the wall remain nearby and the site is one of the most dramatic points on the line of the wall and on the route of the Hadrian's Wall long distance footpath.
