Doggett Coat and Badge Men (London Watermen) shouldering oars wearing their traditional scarlet coats in Lord Mayors Show 2007

London Watermen shouldering oars wearing their traditional scarlet coats and breeches, white stockings and gloves, and silver arm badges, following their bicorn hat leader in the Lord Mayor's Show 2007, Queen Victoria Street, City of London, England, Great Britain, United Kingdom, Europe. — From the Watermen s official site, Watermen rowed passengers up and down the River Thames and were once the equivalent of water taxis. An important social event for watermen was the Doggett Coat and Badge Race, the oldest annual sporting event in Britain — begun in 1715 to commemorate the first anniversary of the accession of George I to the throne. The race was originally organised by Thomas Doggett, an actor and comedian. The race starts at London Bridge and finishes at Chelsea and is still held to this day. The winner has the honour of wearing the scarlet coat, breeches and silver arm badge that are based on the original costume of an 18th century waterman.
