Meanwhile, in the center of the middledistance, through an opening into an inner stable, the back of the shepherd,clad in a blue blouse, shows against the golden-brown obscurity. At the end of the village street, dark, shaggy masses of foliage showagainst a deep blue sky, pierced with several stars and lighted by a moon,invisible on the left. Two figures are vaguely distinguishable, passingbeside a cottage with high-pitched roof, from a window in which gleamsan orange-yellow light. This is on the right of the street, and is succeedednearer to the front by a cottage with red-tiled roof, in front of which standsa cart, painted blue. Next to it is a house, whose steep roof of thatch issurmounted by a coping of tiles. A gateway, with brick piers, and theangle of a reddish roof, close in the right of the foreground. On the leftof the roadway lie the scattered shadows of trees that are outside the scene. Signed at the lower right, Fritz Thaulow.
