India: A 18th or 19th-century rendition from India of a page from Sura LXVIII of the Qur’an, stylized in Kufic script into the shape of a ‘mihrab’, or prayer niche. A mihrab, or‎ maharib, is a niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the qibla—the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, which is the direction that Muslims should face when praying. The wall in which a mihrab is located is called the ‘qibla wall’.
