In myestimation it appears to have been a place of execution and torture. To the north of it there is aplace, about ten feet wide and three feet deep in the centre, banked around withgravel, which appears to have been used for a large fire. Among the ashes in thecentre, I found some thick pieces of potter}- and several pieces of corn cob, withthe corn still intact, burnt like charcoal, and two clay pipes on the side of the pit.*In all my digging I never found a trace of the white mans art; no iron, or copper,or any implement reseml)ling the work of the white man. It is my belief that thetribe wliieli inhabited the Old Fort were cannibals, as I found a large quantity of
