In 1783 he retired to the cultivationof his farm, and declined the chair of mathematicsin the University of Pennsylvania, saying that aslong as he commanded men he would not returnto flogging boys. In 1784-7 he was engaged ascommissioner to run the boundary-lines of Penn-sylvania, and he was also interested in the com-pletion of the western termination of the Masonand Dixon line, although he was not a commis-.
