Replica Roman shields, helmets & a goat-skin tent at a display by the Ermine Street Guard at Loggerheads Country Park, Denbighshire, Wales, UK.

Roman shields, helmets & a goat-skin tent at a display by the Ermine Street Guard at Loggerheads Country Park, Denbighshire, Wales, UK. The hand-stitched tent with waterproof seams is called a papilio (butterfly), it was shared by a unit of 8 legionaries called a contubernium. This accurate reconstruction required 77 complete goat-hides & weighs 40kg (88lbs); it would have been carried by a mule or cart with other communal equipment. The red rectangular scutum shields were used by legionaries, the flat blue oval clipeus shields by auxiliaries. The wickerwork scutum shields were used for weapons training & mock battles. The Imperial-Gallic helmets have hinged cheek pieces & a neck guard. This display took place outside the Loggerheads Countryside Centre on National Archaeology Day 19 July 2003.
