Water pollution testing. Scientist analyses a sample of water for chemical pollutants by using an ion-exchange resin. The wide-necked burettes contain an ion-exchange resin (orange). Water is added at the top of the burette and passes through the resin. Ions in the water become bound to the resin. The identity of the ions that bind depends upon the exact nature of the resin. The remaining solution drips through the burettes' taps into the volumetric flasks below and can be discarded. In the next stage, the original ions are dissolved back into solution. Once the ions have been isolated in this way they can be analysed.
