This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Echus Chasma, Mars, height-colour-coded satellite image. North is at right. This is an overhead orthographic image: red areas are highest, and blue areas are lowest. This image shows the lava-like extent and smoothness of the canyon floor (blue). It is thought that ancient groundwater and lava outflows shaped and formed Echus Chasma and its side canyons. This area is hundreds of kilometres across and the canyon floor is up to four kilometres below the highlands. The image data is from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express Orbiter.
