Three-jet event, evidence of gluons, in the ZEUS detector at DESY, the German particle physics lab in Hamburg. An electron & proton, accelerated in DESY's HERA collider, enter unseen from left & right. Their collision leads to four clusters of energy deposits (coloured blocks). Three have particle tracks leading back to the interaction point; they are due to jets of particles created by a quark, an antiquark & a gluon produced in the collision. The fourth cluster of energy is due to particles originating from the proton; they leave no tracks because they remain initially within the beam pipe. The gluon, a gauge boson, is the carrier particle of the strong nuclear force.
