Killed in action 8 July 1917 at Villers-Plouich, Northern France, whilst commanding a batallion of the Sherwood Foresters; buried at Neuville-Bourjonval, near Ypres. He was the 2nd son of Rev. Canon Woodford St Hill of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand and was a grandson of Henry Charles St Hill, lord of the manor of Bradninch in Devon, for many centuries the seat of that family (anciently spelled 'Sainthill').
