Some freight cars, however, have thesills placed so low that the trucks cannot assume the prcper anglefor such a curve, but such cars arc few in number. One of the features of the track construction of llie S:Lockport line, which is somewhat out of the ordinary, consists ofa crossing of that line with the Lockport branch of the New YorkCentral & Hudson River R. The angle of this crossing is about ii°, too sliarp to permit theuse of stilt frogs with the throats usual in steam practice, becauseof the 2-in. treads in use on certain electric cars operating overthe crossing. To overcome this difficulty resort was had tomovable wing rails in the single frogs, and movable points in thedouble frogs, all of the wing rails and points being connected bymeans of gas pipe and bell cranks, and so made as to be thrownsimultaneously from an ordinary switch stand, thus giving a con-tinuous rail head in the electric track when thrown for that crossing has been in use for over two years, and has givenexcellent satisfaction. So far, it has been operated separately fromthe semaphore used at the crossing, but it will shortly become partof the interlocking system involving both home and distant sig-nals for the crossing.
