Insect compound eye lenses, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). A compound eye consists of many rounded lenses known as ommatidia. Each ommatidium is a simple eye that sends a signal to the fly's brain. All the signals are combined by the insect's brain to form a mosaic view of the world. The image seen is not very sharp but good at detecting movements. These lenses are part of a compound eye of an owl butterfly (Caligo sp.).
