Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the bacteria Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain. This particular strain of lactobacillus was isolated by a graduate from the Medical School of Kyoto University, Minoru Shirota. It was subsequently used to make a probiotic drink known as \Yakult\", first sold in Brazil in 1966 and today sold in 31 countries. Because of the different food standards in those countries, Yakult is sold in many different bottle sizes. In the UK Yakult comes in 65ml bottles. Standard Yakult contains 18g of sugar per 100g and this concentration is classed as high by the UK food standards agency (concentrations of more than 15g per 100g are classed as high). Consequently, to meet the health standards, the serving size has been reduced so that the drink can be sold as a \"health drink\" in the UK. Magnification x10000 (x2500 at 10cm wide)."
