Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), Irish author, playwright and poet. Educated in Dublin and then at Oxford, he moved to London and visited the USA in 1882. He wrote poems, essays, fiction and plays, and worked as a journalist. His most famous works include 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' (1890), 'Salome' (1891), and 'The Importance of Being Earnest' (1895). In 1895, Wilde was put on trial for his homosexual relationships (then illegal). Wilde was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Following his release he went to France, where he died destitute three years later. Photographed circa 1882 by US photographer Napoleon Sarony (1821-1896).
